Themes
OpenChamber supports built-in themes and custom theme JSON files.
Import a VS Code theme
Open Settings → Appearance → Import VS Code theme to search Open VSX. Results show the icon, name and author. Choose a package, compare its color previews, and import the variants you want. Batch import keeps your current theme active. Open VSX is a separate catalog; themes published only in Microsoft Marketplace may not appear.
Use Choose JSON file for a local .json or .jsonc file up to 512 KiB. Desktop opens the local ~/.vscode/extensions folder when it exists. OpenChamber converts UI, general syntax and diff colors, then selects the file’s theme and light or dark mode. The trash icon beside an imported theme in the dropdown deletes it from the connected server. Deleting a selected theme restores the default for that mode.
The theme is saved on the connected OpenChamber server, including when importing from desktop or mobile. Importing the same file again does not create a duplicate or overwrite a theme edited on the server. The VS Code extension follows VS Code’s own theme instead.
If the file uses include or references a separate token file, run Developer: Generate Color Theme From Current Settings in VS Code’s command palette and import the generated JSON.
Add a custom theme
- Create the themes directory:
mkdir -p ~/.config/openchamber/themes- Copy a built-in theme JSON or the starter example into that directory as
my-theme.json. Give it a uniquemetadata.idand your ownmetadata.name, then edit the colors. - Open Settings → Appearance. OpenChamber picks up the new file within a couple of seconds.
- Pick your theme from the dropdown. It applies right away.
Saved edits show up the same way, in every open window. Reload themes reads the folder at once. For a light/dark pair, create two files with different IDs and set metadata.variant to light or dark. Select each in its matching dropdown.
Start with the backgrounds, body text and accent. Keep borders and selected rows subtle, and give inline code a readable color of its own. Check your palette in chat, settings and diffs. Custom JSON keeps your explicit colors; the automatic adjustments used for VS Code imports do not run on these files.
Theme location
- macOS/Linux:
~/.config/openchamber/themes/
This folder belongs to the machine running your OpenChamber server. If you connect to a remote server, save the files there. A custom OpenChamber data directory uses its own themes folder.
